چکیده

The relative importance of phosphorus and nitrogen absorption fkom water and sediments by Egeria densa Planch. (Hydrocharitaceae), a subinerged macropliyte very common in Pampean streams in Argentina, was experiiiientally assesced. Two experiments were performed to determine the importance of water as opposed to sediment cource of phosphorus, and to investigate the effect oftype of nitrogenouc ion dissolved in water on nitrogen uptake by this species. In the first experiment, the concentration ofsoluble reactive phosphorus i i i water had an effect on E. densa biomacc and on tissular phocphoruc concentrations. Absorption rates of phocphorus from water were higher than from the sediment. In a separate experiment, we found that E. densa absorbed more nitrogen from water when it was precent as ainmonium than when it was present as nitrate. Thic differential absorption increased total nitrogen concentration in the macrophytic tissues, but biomacc yield was not affected. Nitrogen uptake from the cediment was negligible. In our experiments, absorption rates from water and sediments were higher for phosphorus than for nitrogen. This suggests that mechanicms of uptake and retention are more efficient for phosphorus than for nitrogen in E. densa.

Pysiological effects of NaCl on Ceratophyllum demersum L., a submerged rootless aquatic macrophyte

In the present study, effects of NaCl concentrations (0, 20, 40 and 80 mM) were investigated in Ceratophyllum demersum. Macronutrients N, P and K and micronutrients Zn and Cu were significantly decreased by NaCl salinity. In general, however, Fe and Mn accumulation showed to increase. As a results, NaCl toxicity disturbed the uptake and translocation of macro and micronutrients in the macrophyt...

Occurrence of macrophyte monocultures in drainage ditches relates to phosphorus in both sediment and water

Monocultures of functional equivalent species often negatively affect nutrient cycling and overall biodiversity of aquatic ecosystems. The importance of water and sediment nutrients for the occurrence of monocultures was analysed using field data from drainage ditches. Ranges of nutrients were identified that best explained the occurrence of monocultures of Elodea nuttallii (Planch.) St. John (...

Oxygen-18 Content of Atmospheric Oxygen Does Not Affect the Oxygen Isotope Relationship between Environmental Water and Cellulose in a Submerged Aquatic Plant, Egeria densa Planch.

We determined that the oxygen isotopic composition of cellulose synthesized by a submerged plant, Egeria densa Planch., is related to the isotopic composition of environmental water by a linear function, delta(18)O cellulose = 0.48 delta(18)O water + 24.1% per thousand. The observation of a slope of less than 1 indicates that a portion of cellulose oxygen is derived from an isotopically constan...
